7th grade tournament - July 2009

A total of 16 teams entered the 7th grade tournament this year, splitinto two pools of 8 teams each. Tahuna entered a combined Zebra's/Gunners team - The Tahuna Storm.

Everyone contributed to a great day, and our seven games resulted in four wins, two losses and a draw, which left us painfully close to topping the group and securing a final place. In fact one more goal would have turned our last game from a draw to a victory and would have been enough. Having said that, the players turned in results throughout the morning that far exceeded expectations. The tournament ended at well past one '0' Clock, after kicking off at 9am, but everyone enjoyed the occasion so much that the time seemed to fly past.

Tahuna Zebra's 9 City Lasers 1 (20/06)

Zebra power....Stronger by the hour!
An excellent performance with goals from Ewan (5), Grace, Jacob and Mika. We are really starting to hit our stride now, and the energy from all the players in the team was terrific. Player of the day wa awarded to Toby for a great all round performance, he was unlucky not to get in on the goals, but if he keeps playing like that he will be knocking a few balls into the back of the net before the season is over. Mika was awarded the outstanding effort award, hot on the heels of his player of the day award from the previous week.
This week we have even been able to sneak in a pictures of the loyal "Zebra Army" fans on the touchline.

Thuna Zebra's V United Meteors 3-4 (6/June)

After a two week absence from a competitive game, the Zebra's put in their best performance to date. It was a cold windy day, but with the fast pace of the game there was no chance of the kids getting cold! The Meteors led 4-1 at halftime, but although we could not quite draw level, we came back in the second half even more fired up to come within just the odd goal. The three goals were scored by Ewan, with a magnificent assist by Grace in the build up to the third, crossing the ball from the wing for Ewan to tap in. Mica was chosen as the player of the day, we hope to post an interview from him soon.

V The City Piranha's 5-2 (9/05)

Our first win of the season, in an exciting, high energy game. Three goals from Ewan, an own goal and an absolute scorcher from Grace to finish off the scoring. The Zebra's defended excellently, and all the team had obviously learned the lessons from practice. The "Player of the day" award went to Grace, and we all want to find out what she had for breakfast to produce such a rocket of a shot!

Interview with Grace - Player of the Day 9/05.
Q1 - How did it feel to score such a great goal?

laugh, "Good"!!!!

Q2 - What do you think of the Zebra team shirts? If you could choose any colour for the team shirt what would it be?

I like the black and white, they go together quite well.

Q3 - Have you been playing football for long? Does anyone in your family play?

I haven't been playing for that long and sometimes my brother and father play with me.

Q4 - Next week the Zebra's play the Tahuna Gunners, can you predict the score?

We will win by 4-3!!!

Tahuna Zebra's V City Sonics 02/05 (4-10)

The season is underway, and despite scoring 4 goals, and an excellent team performance by all, we ended up on the losing side on this encounter. The Sonics look like a very good team, and used their advantage in height and speed to good effect, especially during the closing stages when they scored several unanswered goals.
The good news for Tahuna Zebra's is that every single player involved put in a tremendous amount of effort, and with some great support from the parents on the sideline, we are in for quite a season.

Interview with Ewan (Zebra Player of the Day - Match 1).

What did you think of the game today?
I feel a bit sad because we lost, but I thought the team played well.
What was the highlights of the game for you?
Scoring the last Tahuna goal.
You have already played 7th grade soccer last year, does it feel different this year?
This year my friends are playing but last year I was playing with older kids, so it feels more comfortable playing this year.
Next week you play against your friends in the Tahuna Gunners, are you looking forward to it?
Yes I am, it should be a good game.
